Domaine Charmet - Beaujolais Cuvée Masfraise AOP
We recently had a chat with Master of Wine Richard Bampfield about this new style of Beaujolais that is emerging. It’s no longer the light, fruity, bubblegum stereotype of the Gamay grape that it used to be, the new Beaujolais wines are deep and rich and more complex. Go ahead and try it for yourself.
Gamay grapes are hand harvested before undergoing carbonic maceration for up to 8 days. The result is an elegant and fruit forward Beaujolais with perfumed red fruit. Juicy acidity on the palate is balanced by flavours of plum, red cherry and wild raspberry. A silky mouthfeel is followed by a subtle minerality on the finish.
Country: France
Region: Beaujolais
Grape: Gamay
Style: Red
Alcohol: 13%
Bottle size: 75cl

The first generation of winemakers from the Charmet family came to settle on the hillside of the Ronze in the 1650s. With this rich history, each generation has improved upon the work of the last, in search for quality and terroir expression. The quality of the wines can be attributed not only to the geology, climate and age of the vines, but also to the careful cultivation methods in the vineyard. Winter pruning, manual bud selection and limiting yields provides canopy aeration, naturally limiting disease. Dense plantings encourage concentration of the grapes, which are hand harvested to maintain very high quality, resulting in wines with finesse and nuance.
